RAFT '24: The POPPY Study
Patient reported Outcomes, postoperative Pain and Pain relief in daY case surgery The POPPY study will run from January 15th 2024 when sites will be able to choose 5 consecutive week days to run the POPPY study within a 4 week time period.
The POPPY study is a great opportunity for the anaesthetists to be involved in the 4th RAFT trainee lead project and the first large UK national project looking at pain and opiate use after day surgery in addition to other recovery outcomes. We have worked hard to reduce the burden on our collaborators and participants and make the study as easy as possible to do. https://www.raftrainees.org/raft-4-poppy The study POPPY will look at short- and long-term patient reported outcomes after day surgery with a focus on post surgical pain and opiate use. Data collection will take place over 5 days where baseline data of participants will be recorded by local researchers on a secure online electronic platform. All participant follow up will be managed by the central study team, not local collaborators, through a carefully designed secure platform that will contact participants using SMS text messaging on postoperative days 1, 3, 7 and 97. After this the central team will invite a small number of participants who report persistent pain and opiate use to take part in a more in depth interview on their experiences. How to get involved

Trainee Site Lead(s) - those taking a leadership role who are not doing the Associate PI Scheme at a site where there is not an Associate PI
Collaborators - those who play a key role in the delivery of the POPPY study during the data collection window
Which hospitals have registered Over 140 hospitals have registered to the POPPY study this will mean that those who have recently rotated hospitals will still be able to take part.
