Dear Colleagues,

 

We are Optithermm, a trainee-led collaborative research project which has set out to answer important questions concerning the perioperative management of patients with major burns undergoing surgery.

 

It has long been known that patients undergoing burn surgery are at risk of hypothermia and that this is associated with poor outcomes including increased mortality. However, there are many methods available to monitor and regulate patient body temperature and there is no internationally established universal standard of care.

 

We are attempting to understand the current state of practice in multiple countries by surveying professionals working closely with burns patients around the time of surgery who have knowledge of patient thermoregulation and monitoring.

We are currently recruiting collaborators to assist with the dissemination of the survey. We are seeking to recruit keen students and doctors interested in burns and critical care/anaesthetics. The survey itself is being targeted at consultant burn surgeons and consultant anaesthetists/intensive care doctors who work closely with burn patients around the time of surgery. Your role as a collaborator would be to recruit these consultants to the survey.

 

Any student/trainee who recruits at least five consultants to the survey will be listed as a collaborator on any resulting publication.

Who can get involved?

Any medical student or doctor can sign up as a collaborator to help distribute the survey. The survey itself is targeted at consultant burn surgeons and consultant anaesthetists and intensive care doctors who work with burns patients and will be delivered online. Successfully recruiting participants to the survey will likely involve a combination of face to face and online interactions.

 

When?

We are actively recruiting collaborators in the UK as of October 2022 and data collection will begin in October 2022.

 

Why?

All collaborators who recruit at least five consultants to the survey will be listed as a collaborator on any resulting publication

Make valuable contacts in the fields of burns, anaesthetics and critical care.

Make a valuable contribution to perioperative burns research. Establishing current practice is an important initial step to raising the standard of care.
