Preoperative Care of Major Lower Limb Amputation

This prospective, multi-centre audit of the peri-operative care of major lower limb amputation used the Quality Improvement Framework of the VSGBI to highlight areas where targeted projects might improve outcomes for a patient group with a significant mortality burden (8-32%).

Pre-operative risk stratification was poorly completed and formalised post-operative pain management protocols were lacking. There was variable provision of specialist post-operative Acute Pain and Physiotherapy services in our region.

This project also provided an excellent “proof-of-concept” for the STAR model of efficient, rapid and collaborative multi-centre, trainee-led research and audit in the Severn Deanery.
